It should come as no surprise that Italians are the world's largest consumers of pasta, consuming an average of 51 pounds per year.
As a result of the continuous increase in pasta prices, government officials have decided to take action.
According to Reuters, Italy's Economic Development Minister Adolfo Urso has requested a crisis meeting to debate this situation.
Despite a decrease in the price of durum wheat, Urso reported that the price of spaghetti and other types of pasta increased by 17.5% year-over-year.
This will be one of the topics of discussion when Urso and the Rapid Price Alert Commission meet on May 11th.
Coldiretti, Italy's national farmers union, told ANSA that durum wheat, used to make pasta, has plummeted 30% since this time last year, yet pasta prices increased.
In addition, the prices of both dry and fresh pasta have risen consistently since June 2021, according to the source.
